Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about setting up campsite alerts and securing hard-to-book national park reservation cancellations.
What is CampingSnap?
CampingSnap is an automated campsite tracking service. High-demand national park campgrounds are booked out many months in advance. However, reservations are frequently cancelled. CampingSnap monitors Recreation.gov around the clock and alerts you the instant a matching slot opens up. This helps you secure booking slots that would otherwise be lost.
How do I find a Campground ID on Recreation.gov?
Finding a campground ID is simple. Go to the campground's main page on Recreation.gov. Look at the web address in your browser. The ID is the set of numbers at the very end of the URL. For example, if the URL is https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232447, the campground ID is 232447. Copy and paste this ID into our form to start tracking.
How does CampingSnap compare to Recreation.gov's built-in alerts?
Recreation.gov does offer a basic, built-in alert feature. However, it has significant limitations that make it very difficult to secure high-demand sites. First, Recreation.gov aggregates and sends alerts in large, delayed batches. When an email finally goes out, it goes to hundreds of other campers simultaneously. For popular spots like Yosemite, a single opening email is often sent to up to 300 to 700 people at once. The site is usually booked within seconds, before you can even open the email. Second, CampingSnap provides a dedicated, continuous checking cycle. We check the exact campground and dates you want with rapid frequency. This gives you a critical head start. Third, we plan to expand our coverage to state park reservation systems (like ReserveCalifornia or Oregon State Parks) and backcountry wilderness permits, which are completely unsupported by Recreation.gov's built-in alerts.
Is CampingSnap allowed by Recreation.gov?
Yes. Our service accesses public, unauthenticated calendar data provided directly by Recreation.gov. We respect all robots.txt files, rate limits, and site guidelines. Our search engine runs in a highly optimized manner with appropriate spacing to avoid ever overloading government servers. We check only your active target dates to keep our operations lightweight and polite.
How fast are the alert notifications?
Availability is highly time-sensitive. We check campgrounds continuously. Free watches are processed on standard cycles. Pro tier watches run on our high-priority background loop that triggers every single hour. Because cancelled spots are often booked by other campers within minutes, we recommend upgrading to Pro Access for highly competitive sites like Yosemite or Marin Headlands.
What if I want to cancel my campsite watch?
We respect your inbox. Every notification email we send contains a direct, single-click unsubscribe link at the bottom. You can use this link to stop alerts instantly for that campsite watch. No complex login or credentials are required.
How does the billing work?
Our Pro tier is billed as a simple monthly subscription of $5. This gives you unlimited active watches with instant notifications. Payments are processed securely via Stripe. You can upgrade or cancel your subscription at any time with a single click. There are no hidden fees or long-term commitments.
